The first 60 pages of Sting’s autobiography describe his ayahuasca experience!

CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA: Why is this? Of all the things Sting could have written about, why did he choose to chronicle a personal journey with an ancient psychoactive substance?

The indigenous shamans of the Amazon have been using this sacred plant since antiquity, yet it’s only been recognized outside of the jungles for a mere 25 years. But if you think it’s only the indigenous people who are having these altered-state experiences… think again.

History proves that every single spiritual tradition (including mystical Christianity) has utilized “plant teachers” and other various substances to assist them in moving into non-ordinary reality. Altered states of reality are critical to spiritual growth because every time you plunge into an altered state (an “altered state” is anything other than the consensual world of which you’re accustomed), it literally puts stretch marks on your mind!

With consistent visits, you more and more, through necessity, begin to dis-identify with the small body-mind which you once thought yourself to be and begin identifying with the Infinite God that you are.

The ego gets a bad rap in most spiritual circles.

Ego is nothing more than the Latin word for “I.” The reality is that your ego is not too big… it’s too small! You should be defining yourself with the Godhead, not with this puny body-mind that most cherish so highly.

One of the most powerful ways to move up through the stages in your own evolution is to experience altered states, which cause you to question your “reality.”

Please understand as well that psychoactive substances are not the only way to experience the altered states to which I’m referring… intense love is an altered state… as is sex. Why do you think that one of the most frequent statements at the moment of climax is “Oh my God!”?

If you read Sting’s account, it was fairly profound for his own personal insight and growth. True spiritual altered states invariably have this profound affect. They certainly have for me.

Let me communicate caution here. I have never found or met anyone who has achieved supreme enlightenment through the use of psychoactive substances. You still have to do the work. There is no shortcut to enlightenment. However, my experience has proven that a willingness to consistently work your own spiritual practice, coupled with an occasional radical boost of small ego-blowing proportions, will accelerate your process.

If you’re into partying, then there’s no place for you in a true spiritual quest.
